I spent four glorious days in Pensacola lounging on the beach (covered in SPF 60 and wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, naturally) and eating a delicious combination of seafood and down-home Southern fare. Can you say, shrimp and grits? Yum.
After my all too brief sojourn in sunny Florida, I headed north to Saint Louis, MO to visit Ethan, a guy who might as well be my brother, but isn’t. Because I’m an only child. But we did live together for a long time before he moved to the ‘Rome of the West’ and he’s one of my best friends so it sort of counts.
STL was awesome, but I’m going to gloss over that part of my trip because I already wrote about it in great detail the last time I visited. It was basically a steady stream of historic neighborhoods (we didn’t go to the ghetto this time), beautiful architecture and cured pork products. We also watched a lot of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on TV.
On Wednesday I rolled into Durant, OK to visit yet another former roommate and best friend. She wasn’t there because she was actually in NYC staying in my vacant bedroom, but her husband was home so it was cool. The funny thing is, last Wed I was the one to pick her up from the airport in NY a few hours before I started my road trip. Then when she flew back to OK on Thursday, I was there once again to pick her up from DFW. (Dallas-Fort Worth is actually the closest airport to DOO-rant [or is it Der-ANT?] which is located in that nebulous Texahoma ‘you can’t get there from here’ part of the country.)
In any case, I drove a total of 2,468 miles in 7 days, which is crazy. I’m really looking forward to relaxing at my best friend’s house in my pajamas for a week. Unfortunately (?) I have an opera to learn before my next gig so I’ve got a lot of work to do while I’m here. Then next week I’ll hit the road again and head on down to Abilene, TX!
